For the last one, the organizers stressed that one should probably not undertake the mystery ride if you haven't done D2R2 yet. I'd concur with this completely. It was challenging but felt like it was challenging just for the sake of being a challenge and not really any fun. Of course you could skip some of the harder sections of the Mystery ride, but the skippable parts were some of the more fun sections, while others were just miserable.

If you're able to sustain mucho climbing up dirt & gravel for long periods, then the 180 is fine. The 160 and 115 share many of the same roads, with the 115 being shorter, but not necessarily that much easier. Still plenty of climbing there. So it's really a question of how long you want to be out there. Each ride offers beautiful terrain and plenty of climbing.

All good points. A lot will depend upon my ride in May 2017, Pittsburgh to DC down the GAP and C&O non stop. If I can finish that ride in less than 24 hours and keep my form, then I will do the mystery or 160, if not the 115.

You're certainly going to right direction to attempt that time.

Isn't there a speed limit for those trails? I seem to remember seeing one when I first got interested in doing the route. How are time trial efforts accepted by the locals (and the local authorities)?

I am in for the 180k. If you have not done it before and you are fit the go with the original 180K and enjoy the pickle juice and peaches.

A group of three of use will probably leave Pittsburgh around 9 pm and make it to Cumberland hopefully prior to sunrise (not a lot of GAP traffic during that time).

C&O is usually done around 15-16 mph, with the exception of the gnarly rooted sections.

The goal is to limit the amount of time off of the bike.

My wife will be providing support along the route, so we will not have to hunt for provisions.

I probably won't make it this year. Those who have done it already knew just how fun it is. If you are new to this and thinking about it, I highly recommend trying it out. Check out last year's thread with pals' pictures and stories.

Iā€™m in. Not sure of which route yet, depends on my friends who actually show up!

115 is my usual poison.

Giving this thread a bump. The Mrs can't go this year so I am thinking about signing up for the 160 or 180k route. We did the 100k last year. We took our time and rode at a very casual pace with a fun group of forum members.
It was actually easier than I expected. Looking for more of a challenge this year.
