our neighbout

My best friends father had one of these he used to drive to IBM. We used to skateboard behind it as kids when. His was black, not showroom condition but actually his daily driver in fair weather.

I've yet to see another one on the road.

It's a Messerschmitt. originally the cockpit of a Messerschmitt plane turned into a 3 wheel machine.

A pretty rare sight in my neighborhood. Less than 150 were imported.

Saw this in Miami a couple of weeks ago. Gave me a chuckle because I drove one like that from 1990 to 1999. Russian made Lada 2107. No idea how it got here because as far as I know US never imported them but hey, now that our governments are friends, we'll see more of them I am sure

McLaren MP4-12c

Maybe not the most obscure but pretty impressive in an over-the-top way. It was just sitting in rush hour traffic today.

A neighbor owns four Avantis that he brings out for exercise every sunny weekend. I ride past his house on the way home from rides.

Ladas were the shizzle in the mid-1970s, when I was growing up in the USSR. If you had a Lada you were doing well. If you had a Volga, well, you must have been a party functionary or stealing. Or both. Most of us were car-less.

Meant to post these last week before I went on my hiking trip at big bend. I saw these last Thursday during my lunch walk in the neighborhood close to my office...

Not sure what car it is under the cover, perhaps some of you pals who are more knowledgeable can make an intelligent guess ...

A good pal just acquired one of those monster plastic GMC motorhomes--quite the machine! They evidently have a bit of a cult following with an active network of interweb support.

Live in LA, so there are a lot of cars. Not super obscure but a nice example of BMW 3.0 CSL always nice...those cars are elegant. I have not seen, but I have heard rumors, and would love to catch a sight of a "Singer" Porsche 964 911...

No experience with the 2107 but my brother and I owned 3 Ladas (the Fiat 124 clones) back in Germany in the late 80s.
Bought them used and dirt cheap, perfect cars for college.
We never had a single problem with any of them, simple design, no electronics, easy to fix and surprisingly no major rust issues.
One of them was a station wagon and even had a hole in the front bumper for manual crank start!
I remember that the toolset was the most comprehensive one I've ever seen in any car and the heater probably could have warmed up a full size van.
Both necessities for a car driven in remote areas in Siberia, I guess.

BTW, even though I was generally happy with the Fiat 128 I've owned, I would still be reluctant to use the words "Fiat" and and "dependability" in one sentence (sorry @fiataccompli)

In order to value a Lada, one has to keep in mind what the design goal was, and under what conditions these cars were supposed to run. Surely, a BMW of the day would have been more comfortable and faster, but it would have lasted about 2 years max in those conditions. For the purpose and resources at hand, they were quite good (as, surprisingly, most russian items of the cold war era were).
Fiats once were quite good cars, up to around 1970 they had a reputation of being affordable, a bit more sporty than the competition, and of good quality. Then the fellas with the suits and the red markers took over and everything went downhill. (same is true, even more so, for Lancia - even more sporty, flawless quality, only lacking when it comes to the "affordable" bit)
