Tour of Belgium (Spoiler)

normally, I wouldn't care about ToB that much but what is noteworthy with this year's race in its opening prologue ....if I didn't tell you, you would never have guessed who had beaten the former world TT champ Tony Martin in a million years. And it's not like the recent ITT upset by that Russian kid at the Giro, this is someone already at the top of his class but in a different discipline.

It's simple math. There's a LOT more money/prestige on the road.

WvA is a monster.

I'm guessing you're right, or why would cx have lost Stybar and Boom? this makes it less obvious though.

"Man, that is a lot of cash for a ’cross season. €800,000 is approximately $1,100,000. I very much doubt he gets paid that much to ride on the road, but what do I know about that? He did have a pretty good road season last year."

base pay for a Pro Tour rider is $50k. last year Stybar won $67k (source). remember, that includes 1st at Strade Bianche, a TdF stage win, 2nd at Paris Roubaix, and 2nd at E3 Harelbeke. not exactly a downer of a year. I'm SURE he doesn't make $50k base, but does he make over a million to justify giving up cx just for money?

Prize money in cycling is a joke. The entire economics of professional cycling are a joke.

Wout Van Aert usually dominates the cyclocross discipline, who would have thought he's actually a pretty decent road time-trailist, good enough to beat a former world champ.

Yikes. Yet another race-moto clusterfck resulting in serious injuries to a cyclist.
