Sounds just like Tom Thumbs Blues...

"I cannot move, my fingers are all in a knot
I don't have the strength to get up and take another shot
And my best friend, my doctor, won't even say what it is I've got"

I wonder if the guy who told this story might have heard it from a reliable source, but didn't realize that it is mtb thumb shifters that have caused more than a few chronic and severe thumb-joint injuries(?).

I heard long ago that the switch to below-the-bar mtb shifter designs was in response to racers suffering thumb injuries when shifting while traversing bumpy terrain that their bouncing glasses and eyeballs prevented them seeing clearly. Bikes had no suspension in those days, so with the lever oriented in such a range of angular positions during use, could literally cause thumb joint failure under unlucky conditions of lever position, thumb motion and trail impacts.
The newer designs of shift levers returned the lever to the same angular position after each shift, with the lever held more perpendicular to the thumb's direction of force, preventing impact forces from being transmitted as directly.

I broke my thumb biking once... it was a Shimano equipped bike.

Since riding Campy I have not broken any thumbs.

By this, logic says shimano causes thumb breaks right?

I was so worried about my thumbs I switched to EPS barends... And no more beer cans, that pop top wrecks my thumbs, really...no, not really. One of the reasons I come to this forum..there is a lot of stoopid info on the web.

I am not even sure he got this from the web. I have no idea where this came from. Dude was out of his mind. He had opinions about everything, including my fit on the bike, how disc brakes are the best thing since sliced bred (but not hydraulic, just cable discs), made fun of the weight of my steel bike amongst other things. It was a riot.

As of today, taking all my campy off all my bikes, my wife told me to, she does not want me to run the risk of braking both thumbs and not being able to work.

I remember 8s Sora thumb levers and people thought that Campy was no better than the lowest level Shimano. I had a a few people say to me: "I'd never ride Campy because I only ride real STI". Ha, ha...you forgot to tighten your brake lever.
