Help! Squeaky MTB Shoes
I am having a tough time chasing down some squeaks in my gravel/CX shoes. I'm using Specialized BG Pro MTB shoes with Shimano PD-M780 pedals. The shoes squeak incessantly when pedaling hard. It's worse when seated, but still noticeable when standing. I've lubed the pedal/cleat interface with a Teflon dry lube. I've also used a wax-based lube under the Velcro straps on the shoes. Any suggestions to quiet down my ride?
Thanks, Greg |

Could it be the rubber outer sole rubbing against the body of the pedal?
Puzzling. |

I had success liberally applying chain oil to the pedal clip in mech. It just gets the pedals really dirty.

I use a silicone food grade grease on the shoe plate beneath the clear engagement my points of the pedal on my sidis-the pedal clip in mechanical part actually touches the shoe.

Are your feet rubbing the crank arms?

you have another pair of shoes you can try out with that bike?
eliminate some sources for the noise. |

i've had this issue on my road shoes now & then, typically when i've ridden in or walked in muck or a few days after a water spay-filled ride. buddy of mine said in a pinch if you're getting the squeaks while riding and see a puddle, stick the bottom of the shoe (just the sole/cleat, without getting the upper wet) in the water and swish it around a little. chances are something got under the cleat itself, or in the bolts, etc. fancy that, it worked.
if you want to be very thorough about it, which i've done, then remove cleat and bolts, clean everything thoroughly (esp. the recessed holes in the shoe sole, get any muck outta there) and grease bolt threads with something like phil wood grease, and apply a very thin layer of phil between cleat and sole. that's worked for me as well......until the shoes get full of muck again at some point in future. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I have ridden with another pair of shoes that to the best of my recollection did not squeak. Definitely not due to rubbing the crank arms. I'll try some of the suggestions and let everyone know if I'm successful.

can you put on some new cleats on your shoes?

I spray Pledge on pedals and cleats (bottom of shoes) after hitting them with a stiff bristled brush to eliminate contact squeaks. Pivot squeaks get a couple drops of tri-flow. Not necessarily better than any other lube, but it does wick well and I have a large bottle that doesn't get used for much else.

I took the collective advice and dripped some Boeshield T-9 on the soles of the shoes around the pedal interface area. I spread the lube around and let it dry. This afternoon I took a 25 mile ride around the dusty carriage roads of Acadia National Park. The pedals stayed quiet for nearly the entire ride. In the last few miles, I heard some squeaks. Now that I know the source of the noise, I will try some other lubes (and maybe Pledge) to find a longer lasting solution.
Thanks again, Greg |
