Rear wheel dish on 10 spd vs. 11 spd

Got a bike equipped with SRAM Red 10 spd. that I'm contemplating upgrading to 11 spd e-tap. Wheels are 10 spd with Shimano cassettes.

What would I need to do (besides having them rebuilt) regarding putting an 11 spd cassette on there? Any tips or tricks to make it work? Is there a dish difference btw 10 vs. 11 that makes it worthwhile to just have it rebuilt and done proper?

what wheels, or more specifically - hubs are they?

i swap various wheels now & then.

at the moment i use mostly alu rims, open pro or dt, each w/ultegra 6700 hubs, 10 spd. the other fancier set for when i don't have to go uphill is edge 45's with dt240 hubs, rear is a powertap (which i think has dt internals?).

The only 11s road cassette you'll be able to fit on a 6700 hub is the new R8000 11-34. You'll need to get new wheels/hubs to fit a normal 11s road cassette. The freehub body is too narrow.

If you're running one of a few wheels (Mavic mostly) with a spacer behind your 10sp cassette, you may not have to do anything to go 11 on the same hub.

If you don't have that 1.85mm spacer behind your cassette, you'll need to re-hub that wheel.

I'm asking because I don't know, but does Shimano make any 11spd freehub bodies that can be retrofit to 6700 hubs? You used to be able to convert 7spd hubs to 8spd by replace the freehub body (and possibly shuffling some axle spacers).

For example, can you retrofit this 11spd 6800 freehub body onto a 6700 hubshell?

As for the other wheels, DT240s hubs can definitely be converted to 11spd, as can more recent Powertap hubs, by replacing the freehub body.

Cannot put a 11s cogset on there unless it's shimano MTB 11s, the new 8000 11-32, 11s or Campagnolo. First position cog about same place, 10s and 11s...RH hub flange closer to centerline with 11s.. an OC rear rim a great idea.

For right above, no, cannot use 11s shimano FH bodies on older 10s hubs.

^^ How about DT hubs spaced for 10 spd, which accepts Shimano or SRAM cassettes? I use Shimano cassettes and chains, because the less SRAM used on a SRAM group, the better it works.....

Ultegra 6700 rear hubs can likely be upgraded to 11s by using the process detailed HERE for 7700 hubs. I have not done any 6700 hubs myself, but looking at the 6700 diagram (attached) it should work exactly the same way.

DT240 can be upgraded with a simple free hub swap. Probably $50-75.

Powertap can be upgraded in most cases.

DT 11s FH body and axle end... I have them, $90 shipped.

With dt Swiss hubs no. The end cap swap takes up the difference. No redish required. It's literally a 2 minute operation and requires no tools.

If it's a shimano 10s compatible wheel and FH body, like 6700, 7800/7900, etc, yes, new hub and rebuild wheel. If it's a type that can be converted, new FH body(and maybe end cap), like DT..If it's a Mavic rear wheel, it is already 11s compatible.

Which rear hub is it..the suspense is killin' me!!

Sold the shop, help to nanny 2 grand daughters, build a lot of wheels, ride lots these days...if ya need a rear wheel bult, let me know.

New hub/rebuild to 'go to 11'. DT are convertible to 11s. If you want to go to 11 and don't want to rebuild a wheel, use 10 of 11 cogs of a 11s cogset, that'll work with any 11s shifting syst.
