Alan bikes
Anyone have any experience with Alum. Alan frames, the newer versions not the old flexy glued ones. Thinking about a SUPER CORSA SCANDIUM frameset- the price is decent 770 euro ($905 USD) shipped. They will also do a taller HT for the same price.

No idea about the Alan ones, but "Hercules" used a very similar construction in the nineties -Scandium tubes glued to machined lugs- called "Titanal"
They are notorious for breaking at the joints. The Sc alloy is just too brittle to bear with the load at that spot.

Re:
It looks beefed-up from the old flexy ones. I'd still worry about the alu fork though. I had a Klein with a cast alu fork that was just plain scary on descents.

Monocoque carbon fork, but I had similar experiences on a Klein Pinnacle I think..

I was wondering if the fork was still made of aluminum, did not see any specs for the forks, the other detail is that in some bikes the lugs are tigged, bike looks awesome but with the lugs welds visible just kills it for me. Bad idea from alan, thats the reason the brand pretty much went south too, from top quality to really ****ty stuff... years ago their full welded aluminum frames were just fugly...
I think their price is super attractive... I would buy a track one hehe |

riding buddy had one of the aluminum w/ carbon rear triangle cross bikes. The epoxy holding the carbon stays in place failed twice. Got it warrantied both times IIRC - this was circa. 2002ish.

I'm pretty sure it's a welded aluminum frame with painted panels to look like lugs

my fave is the Mito Legend
a modernized tribute to the iconic record carbonio from the '80s.
i think its full carbon with a faux-alu finish on the "lugs". http://alanbike.it/en/road/mito-en/ Last edited by wallymann; 08-09-2017 at 06:47 PM. |
