Local fat bike race fatality

This past weekend, a relatively young rider/racer collapsed and died from a heart attack during a local fatbike race.

He was an employee of Landry's in Worcester, MA and was their BGI master fitter.

I didn't know the guy but he apparently was an avid cyclocross and MTB racer.

So sad

I worked in a shop fairly soon after I left it. He showed me the first FAT bike I ever saw and chatted with him about my new Firefly. He was one strong dude, could of picked me up with one hand. Nice guy.

rest in peace Jeff, may the wind be behind you

This is incredibly sad. But it should also be a reminder that we all need to think about our heart health and get screened if we are going to push our bodies to their limits. The simple truth is that not all humans are "healthy" enough to do endurance sports and we shouldn't pretend that we are robots with no genetic differences or predispositions. None of this takes the sadness away, but getting it into the open may help prevent others from dying young.

* N=1 -- my wife had a catheter ablation at 31 to fix a heart arrhythmia that developed when she was 13; she deals with PAC/PVC on a daily basis and had to give up strenuous running/biking. But she loves walking together and has a beautiful yoga practice. We'll probably get out for some flat spins together this summer though. Her life is still good without racing or Strava. If she had ignored the symptoms, I don't know if she'd be here today..

Great post.

Don't know that all of us need to be medically screened before doing endurance sports, but it does mean that we need to listen to our bodies and not just dismiss stuff because 'hey, I'm in great shape, this can't be anything'.

Love the user name!
