Campy 9 speed questions
Looking at a bike with 9 speed record on it
All silver including the hubs Those are laced to mavic cxp-33 Not sure of the number of spokes guess 32 or 36 Only thing not silver are the Brifters Those are carbon Excellent condition What would you say the value of group is? Are there better levels of cassette still available? Doing a quick search I only found some new veloce and some miche My other thought would be to do a conversion to 10 speed so then all bikes have interchangeable rear wheels I would get new chain and cassette and have right shifter updated Thanks for your insights |

Definitely will need new cassette
A 23 low is too high for me That is part of reason for the question |

I like Campag 9, and I use the Veloce cassettes on all my bikes. As far as I know, the main difference vs Record or Centaur/Daytona is that they are a little heavier due to lacking niceties such as alloy carriers or Ti cogs. I have the 13-28 and it's just about enough gear to get around the Blue Ridge with a double, but I do sometimes wish for a compact....

From driving thru blue ridge on 81 I can see the need for a compact |

If all the same year components, they are most likely 1999-2000 though the Record 9 Ergo levers and RD continued to be available through the 2004 model year. This is nice stuff, could have either the 8 speed style or 10 speed style RD, depending on year. Hubs should be the prized oversized axle type if year matches the Ergo levers, but could be the early 9 type as well. Could be 28, 32, or 36 hole, with 28s being most valuable. I'd value the group somewhere in the $400 - 500 range, + $250 - 350 for the OS axle wheels - though a couple of recent ebay wheelsets have sold for around $200.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mavic-CXP-33...p2047675.l2557 There's nothing wrong with the Veloce 9 cassettes, which continue to be available in 12-23, 13-23/26/28, and 14-28. Same material as Chorus cassettes, just lack the aluminum carrier on the large cogs. On a 12-23 cassette the weight difference was about 35g. |

If the levers are 1999 or later, they can be converted to 10s. Need to look at back of lever to see if it can. 1998-no, 1997-no.

I'm not sure this is totally true. I've converted 1998 Chorus 9spd levers to 10spd. I think the primary difference is Gen. 1 (pointy hood) vs. Gen. 2 (domed hood).

So you can convert pointy 8s to 9s and 1999 9s to 10s and 8s for that matter.

How do you tell if the lever can be converted to 10 speed
Is there a marking or something I should look for on the carbon lever? I'm thinking since I would want new cassette to get the 13-28 or 13-26 Right now it has 23 I would need a new chain as well If I can do the conversion of lever how expensive? Thanks |
