The one tech thing I found interesting was that at some point VW did an ECU reflash on these cars in a supposed effort to bring them into compliance. I recall bringing my 2013 TDi in for it's free service and the service manager told me that they performed a routine ECU reflash while it was in having the oil changed. My memory is fuzzy on stuff like this but I seem to recall that after the ECU work that my car ran rougher and that the cooling fan seemed to come on much more often.

If I understand it right this reflash made it so the car ran cleaner for the first 23 minutes of driving. Well it turns out that the CARB emissions test lasts 22 minutes so in essence they were piling on another defeat device on top of the first one.

I guess they must have figured they were in for a foot so they may as well go in for a mile. Clever but stupid.

Yup. They did this to my Gen1. Mileage dropped, engine ran rougher. There was no way to back it out, either, other than an aftermarket flash. Deceptive.

I bought a 2014 TDI in March of 2015. The software upgrade was done at the free 30 check up. I've never seen the mileage others get with their TDIs. I only see low to mid thirties in town and low forties on road trips.

I won't be missing much when I switch to a gas engine after my buyback.

Maybe not, but I'll bet you'll miss the >500 mile range. I certainly do. As for that "emissions fix/recall" - I had it done to my 2014 TDI and saw no difference of any kind, and that as I recall it was the general consensus on the TDI Forum as well.

Yeah, once I get the Bosch settlement, it will have cost me under a grand to move up from a '13 to a '17... unbelievable.

I went from a '14 JSW TDI SE to a '17 Alltrack SE and the settlement was a couple of thousand more than the cost of the car - and that didn't even include the Good Will Package or the Bosch settlement.
