Edit: this hypothetical, moderately portly fellow would need a Medium, if that matters...

Thanks, Doug
I have the Ultra in a Medium, but haven't ridden the non-ultra version to compare. One thing that will make a noticeable difference in the ride quality are the wheels. I have the Dura-Ace 7850-SL wheels on mine and these are pretty comfy compared to some of my carbon wheels. With this setup, I've always felt this was one of my more comfortable bikes to ride.

It seems like Look listed some percentage for the increased stiffness in their marketing information for the Ultra. You might be able to dig that up if you are interested.

Here is a discussion on another forum about the the stiffness differences...

Have an Ultra, had a standard immediately before that (replacement: shop cracked/separated the internal seat post sleeve from the seat tube if I'm saying that correctly).

Obviously unable to do an A-B comparison but I couldn't remember a difference in ride.

If it helps with respect to weight, I've ridden them being #175 to #205 and back.

Okay, the exact stiffness measurements are proprietary information, but I can give you a pretty accurate comparison of the frames you're asking about. One thing to keep in mind is that the 15% stiffer claim for the Ultra models is an average of the measurements taken at different points on the frame (headtube, B/B, and rear triangle for example). That is to say, the Ultra models are not necessarily 15% stiffer across the board; they may have a headtube that is 20% stiffer, a B/B that is 15% stiffer, and a rear triangle that is 10% stiffer. By doing this, we are able to "tune" the ride quality by optimizing stiffness for each area depending on the function of that area.

If you were to rank the frames from "least stiff" to "most stiff", it would be the 585, 595, 585 Ultra, 595 Ultra. A 595 frame averages about 5% stiffer than a 585 frame. I don't have data for the forks at the moment, but the HSC6 fork on the 595s is also stiffer than the HSC5 on the 585s (the HSC6 uses a 1 1/4" lower bearing so it has a beefier crown).

Hi guys,

Loving all the talk and pics of 585s here so finally got around to taking a pic of my 2008 585 Ultra.

Repainted a couple of years ago (loosely based on the Colnago C-series paint scheme) as the frame was showing a lot of signs of usage plus red, white, black designs were never my thing.

Built with some old 10 speed Campa parts which have been upgraded to eleven speed and together with a Roadlink it shifts an 11-34 cassette with no issues (even tested it with an 11-36)

So I was looking to sell mine which was custom painted by the previous owner, but seeing yours here is giving me other ideas.... oof I don't need to keep another bike. The painted lugs look amazing.

Missing "Look" on the seatstay? I believe Look made absolutely certain everyone knew what the bike brand underneath the rider was.

Awesome bike - very handsome.

Older Look font on the seat tube and newer Look font on the downtube?
Does it still say Ultra in all the right places? Can't tell if it's there just in red therefore not standing out as much.

And we have a winner 🏆

The painter sourced a logo for the downtube as I didn’t want it to say 585 ultra but didn’t check with me so ended up with a newer font - I don’t mind actually as it makes the frame even more unique to me 😁.

I chose not to have any ultra writing on the frame to keep it as clean as possible (kept the small VHM and Look “Mondrian” logos though)
