I like aluminum ALOT for crits & cx racing, its got its place. But I never understood the vynl or spooky bikes, seems like such a poor value, and the gaulzetti's are even more expensive. |

If anyone is in the market for a cheap as chips and decent quality aluminium frame/fork/headset, Trek is selling off their Emonda ALR framesets for $699 now:

These bikes look killer but you can buy a complete caad12 for just little more.
As far as ride quality goes, aluminum frames have come a long way. I'm riding a caad12 and running 25's and there's no road buzz. The bike rides like my EVO hi-mod. Only difference is it's about 1/2 lbs heavier. I've ridden carbon bikes since '05 and right now I'm riding an aluminum bike and a steel bike and I'm not missing a thing. Hoping to have something Ti under me soon. |

Totally. a pure race machine (crits or CX) are good applications for alloy. I could maybe get into that, if I did crits, or if I wanted a CX bike that I didn't actually spend more time on than strictly racing. |

I just did D2R2 on my aluminum Gaulzetti. Every single thing about it was better than when I did it on my Honey two years ago.

Your Honey is sick. Still have it, or did it finally sell? |

Haha. I still have it, and am building it up as my dedicated singlespeed for this season. I still love it, I just wish a couple things about it (tire clearance and braking mainly) were different (and I translated those to my 'zetti).

Ventana makes these frames not FTW. Yes they are aware of Paul and Rock Lobster - In fact one of the designers races for the RL factory team.
I think they def have their place in crits and cx racing. I've been racing on Aluminum Lobsters for 5+ years and even won a few over dudes fully outiftted in plastic. Zing! |

Don't
They're pretty great; lightweight, stiff, reasonably comfy and most importantly fairly inexpensive for their performance level.
Aluminium for life! |

I just saw my first VYNL on a ride a couple of days ago and was impressed! Sharp looking bikes!
