Saw him in concert with Bob Dylan a couple of years ago. Dylan was doing a croaky swing band thing and had a fabulous band and staging, but MK stole the show.

It seems unlikely we heard Sultans of Swing was actually played on the radio in 1978.
I had no idea it was after being re-released in 1979 when it became a hit.

I was(am) a fan, had a teammate back in the '80s who believed it impossible to start a race without having his Dire Straits fix. Which was a home recorded 90 minute tape (remember those?) with his own song order, 45 minutes each side. Good times.

Funny thing - my MEMORY of it was actually '79 as well, based on where I was at the time, which COULD have been '78, but was much more likely to have been '79. But in the past couple of weeks, with his new album in heavy rotation on my streaming service, I'd gone back and watched some videos of it and saw some reference to it's '78 release. So I figured I'd remembered it wrong and mentioned '78 here...

Thanks for putting me straight on this - my memory was actually better than I was willing to trust!

BTW, a short section of the guitar lead from Sultans is my ringtone for most calls on my iPhone. Specific other tones for my wife, daughters, brother, sister, and a particular old friends, but all other calls come in with MK ripping on that lead...

Dire Straights was the first concert I ever went to. I think it was 1986 at the Hartford Civic Center. The Brothers in Arms era.

I'm the worst for that kind of thing. I would have sworn my bedside radio
was red, and i found a picture the other day and it was black plastic.
and I have no idea where it went!

His soundtrack for the film 'Cal' is really good as well. His music is so evocative, even his 'rock' tunes set a mood that strike emotional, not just musical, chords. His 'Local Hero' soundtrack is wonderful too.
