Ot golf type r mkvii
I love my 2011 mk6 gti but have had the itch to replace it for no other reason than wanting something new. I've looked at the focus, bmw's, audi, etc and really can't find anything that better suits my needs. There are faster, flashier and more luxurious cars out there, but for a frugal guy who likes to have fun driving (and wants to carry a bike inside his car) it's hard to beat a GTI.

It is exactly to the Mk VII Golf what the M3 is to the base 3 series.

last week on the pbs show motor week they did a review of the golf and the golf r. nothing but good things to say about the r except at almost $38,000 way over priced and that the gti was a better performance value in the vw lineup.

As for Golf R prices, when you compare the high-line R with the equivalent GTI (Autobahn ed. w/leather upholstery and PP & Lighting packages) they are between $3-4K apart. You lose the sunroof and gain AWD and additional HP. If you compare with the Base GTI and no options they're about $10K apart.
The R is very similar to the Audi S3 -- same chassis, engine and transmission -- but in a hatchback rather than a sedan, somewhat different interior design and several thousand less than the S3. Comparing like with like, there's no way the car is "overpriced" (never mind "way overpriced"). |

I'm waiting on the AWD TDI 2015 Volkswagen SportWagen to come out. I've been waiting too long to settle for anything less. Now about the price point..... We shall see

VW supposedly has lowered the price on the new Sportwagen.

I haven't driven one yet but the May Issue of Motor Trend compares the Golf R with the hot Subaru. The gist is that the Subie is a fun track toy but the VW is a wonderful all-around car and slightly faster around Laguna Seca Raceway. Whether you want to spend almost $40,000 for either one is up to you. I'm guessing I would think the standard GTI would make more sense for me.
OTOH my 2007 MINI Cooper S has only 48,000 miles, gets 30 mpg overall, is fun to drive and Eric likes riding in the back. It does have a choppy ride but I guess if a car turns in like a go-kart it's probably also going to ride like a go-kart. |

The Golf R is a great car, that is if you're not daily driving it in daily dense, urban traffic. Glad VW finally gave some options like manual transmission that were lacking the last few years. I think with the hopefully one day coming 400-R version, and competition from AWD Ford focus in the high-performance hatch area that the R for the moment will start to shed it's "limited" sorta status and get into normal production.
That said, I'll agree with what a few others have said that the MKVII GTI would be a better all around product right now, and to some effect sales even reinforce that. The few R's I see on dealer lots not pre-ordered tend to sit. Not downing the high performance car, but once you go through a water pump or two, and have a 50$ part go only to cause 1,000's in damage - much like any car - even when being meticulous with maintenance you rethink it's premium really fast! FWIW I've have the Fahrenheit, an R, and now back to a stock mkvi (with warranty ) They're all different and I do like them all, but I have learned it is just helpful look at them with open eyes and not just dreamy eyes! |
