OT: Ken Block 1400 HP Mustang on Pike's Peak

Not very good for the tires.

Agree, an awesome video. Pikes Peak might be a tough climb, but its no match for a 1400HP Mustang with a good driver at the wheel. Toyo makes a good tire. They got a workout the day that video was made.

I wonder how many tires they went through...

Also, for those searching for the source material https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEuZG37gFdM. I liked the one handed sun blocking homage.

I've obviously known Ken for a while, in fact I co-drove for him in his very first rally and was the person responsible for partnering him with Alex long-term. I find some of the gymkhana stuff pretty silly, but there is no denying Ken's ability to build a brand and a following, and some of the stuff he does is just genius. The sun blocking homage fell into that category. He obviously needed to block the sun, but including it in the video was no random cut. A very clever homage.

FWIW, Pikes Peak is so wide, that the only way to do it is in a 700hp tube frame car. In a 340hp rally car, it was a snoozefest.

What's the backstory with the sunblocking "homage?" I saw it at 4:00.

I really like the looks of that Mustang. The new ones leave me cold.

5:15 was a set up.

You want a vintage Mustang that handles better, and can out perform a modern version? Check out Meir Racing and what they can do to, and offer for vintage stangs...

The most famous (only famous) video of a specially built car on Pikes Peak is Ari Vatanen driving the Peugeot 405T16 in "Climb Dance." He blocks the sun at about 3:30. Every rally driver I know recalls it.

By the way, if you want to watch rally videos, there is nothing, nothing, that beats Ari Vatanen and Terry Harryman on the '83 Manx in the big and burly Opel Manta. If you just want the funny part, watch between 1:30 and 2:09. That, in a nutshell, is rallying. But come on, Terry, back on the notes a bit quicker than that, eh.

Meh. It wasn't much of a challenge now that they've paved the whole thing and he didn't have to pass tourists driving 15 miles per hour the whole climb. Wuss didn't even try the donuts when he got to the top.
