Pretty sure wallyman has an equally excellent timeline of the Colnago steel Master family, that he shared here. I recall he helpfully replied to where my steel Colnago belonged. Can't find link but pretty sure it is here.
Coincidentally, rode that Colnago in weirdly warm weather in NYC today, 90 degrees! Weather might vary or be crazy but man Colnagos sure remain special and make one smile, even after all the years |

Ah great you found the link. And good luck with the Colnago search. I'm sort of searching for an EPS myself. Probably way beyond my means but one can dream. Btw, that Colnago Conic of mine has had a few upgrades and touch up since the pic in that thread. I posted a pic after the ride today on the 'steel lovers' thread. Upgrades or not, it just rides great.

According to internet babble, Ernesto did not 1 1/8/threadless, so it wasn't until the next generation that you got the larger forks--Dream B-Stay (2004), C50, CT-2, so it is probably the hybrid Master (Wallyman calls it the Master B-Stay) that had the carbon rear stays that had the first 1 1/8 fork, but that is a guess. Here are two other sources for dating certain models/features:

Not to highjack thread but since you ask. Hyperons are on my C40.
EPS/EP. Have no direct experience of either, so good to know that you find the EP fantastic. Not being Erik Zabel, I'm sure I couldn't tell the difference between the two Just that the EPS seems to elicit the kind of reviews formerly reserved for the C40. For instance, Brian Palmer at WMP while noting the giddyup to EPS, also calls it the most comfortable bike he has ever ridden. (Yes, we know that comfort isn't all about $$$$ frames but things like tires and tire pressure. But still.) Seems like a pipe dream in any case. |

I stopped investigating them around the release of the Master B-Stay. I also recall Colnago discontinued MXLs for a few years in the mid 00s, then one year they tried with the Master B-Stays. I'm glad they are selling them again, but I'm also fine with not getting one. I also vaguely recall hearing that the Tecnos tubing was better for light riders than the MXL tubing. I think it may have been from a poster on Roadbikereview.com who had an MXL and was familiar with steel 'Nagos in general (may be lonefrontranger?). I could be full of it, though. |

Can hardly claim to be a Colnago expert, but in answer to your question, will say that I believe you are correct that if a steel Master has a Precisa fork it has a 1" HT. Even the earlier carbon frames/forks such as earlier versions of C40 had 1" forks/ht.
As for the Extreme family you might be exactly right that the only difference between EP/EPS is the integrated headset in the latter. That being the case, while they both get positive reviews, beats me why the reviews of EPS verge on the hyperbolic. In any case, bet they are both rather nice |

I had a CT-1 (1" carbon) and a late model Tecnos (1" carbon) although I think the steel Precisa was optional on at least the earlier Tecnos. My Master Piu shipped with the 1" chrome Precisa, but it was late 80s. Last edited by paredown; 09-25-2017 at 08:28 PM. |
