They almost threw this away...

So I was visiting my favorite local bike co-op on Friday and my friend Juan who works there tells me about a Giant road bike that someone had donated recently but is now on the trash pile. It had a dent on the down tube which prevented them from restoring it and then re-selling on the shop floor. But it has nice 10-speed shimano components that still have a lot of life left so they had stripped the bike clean off its parts and had left the frame outside in the trash. Juan took me outside and showed me where it was. I looked at it and thought that the dent "wasn't really that bad" and it's a shame that the bike should meet such end. I started to take pity on it but was sort of in a dilemma because a month ago I had just finished re-organizing my garage with all the bikes that I got and felt that I had reached n=perfect number and wasn't planning to add any more bike to the collection, at least not in the near future. Anyhow, in the end, compassion got the better of me and I took the frameset home. Started building it up on Saturday afternoon and thought the end result is not bad. Obviously, the proof is in the pudding, so I plan on taking it out later this morning for my regular Sunday AM ride for a quick spin around the block.

You should found a charitable organization called the WSPCB--the Weisan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Bicycles.

happy pal, I have definitely done my fair share of "puppy" bike rescues over the years, that's for sure.

Did 40 miles this morning.

I am "shocked" by the quality of ride. That's all I am gonna say.

Looks great weisan pal. How do you think it got a dent in that location?

I bought a 2011 Giant Defy with 105 off of Craiglist a few years back, paid $300. My plan was to use it as a dedicated trainer bike, but it rode so well that it ended up replacing some much nicer bikes in my steed. Just a reminder how good even the entry level bikes have become.

True dat. I would be hard pressed to call this an entry level bike because it rides so well...I mean, hate to say this, I wouldn't mind if this is the only dedicated bike I have, it's that good.

Weisan-pal, you said in the other "aluminum plunge" thread that this fits 28's, maybe 30's or 32's. Is it running mid-reach brakes, or are those standard?

If I can find one in XXL, I wouldn't turn it away...

A co-op being picky???? doesnt surprise me... the co-ops I know here sell the stuff they got for free in some cases more than retail.

Whats the purpose of a co-op when it becomes a store in disguise??? not a rant just saying...

BTW i would have taken the frame back home, and store it for my kids. OP did you check alignment??

I think its less "being picky" and more the co-op doesn't want the potential future liability of something going wrong with an aluminum frame dented that close to the BB on the downtube. Tough to tell from the photos, but it looks like it isn't a small ding.

Yeah, they probably felt in all good conscience they couldn't sell it in that condition.

Giant = best bang for buck bikes out there. Full stop.

Yes, liability issue.

I didn't check alignment but was able to ride hands free without effort.

Fortunately it's on the down tube which will be in tension under most riding circumstances. If it was under compression it would be more worrisome!
