Bozeman, MT
What's in the water out there? First there's transplant Dave Kirk making some beautiful bikes. And then there's the Bozeman Watch Company.
And I just received a phone mount from Hondo Garage. Designed and built in Bozeman. Seems rock solid and my phone stayed secure despite some hooliganism. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Schnee's is also in Bozeman. They make some fantastic hunting boots. IIRC, Carl Strong is there too.

Strong bicycle was there first. The Cycling House is just down the road in Missoula, MT.

Not to hijack the thread but - Looks like Bozeman Watch has vanished.

Isn't it strangely sad (or sadly strange) that, what, maybe 100-250 people max in the world (perhaps even fewer) know what this short sentence means?

My hometown!
It's always collected people who want to be there to play (e.g., my dad). But it's always been a trick to earn enough since you can't eat scenery. Therefore, strong incentive to do your own thing if it can pay. Hard to believe, but when I was a kid Patagonia moved some of their operations to Bozeman. It left after a couple years because it was too isolated. These days it attracts outside money that wants to live and sell there. |

It's a terrible place to live, just terrible I tell you.
That's yesterday at one of the arms of the Madison River where it enters Ennis Lake, about 45 minutes from Bozeman. That water right there is full of rainbows... Had my best day of the year there yesterday. Unemployment in the county is running at 2.6% - the construction business has sucked up all of the available labor. It may be difficult to find a high paying job here, but if you swing a hammer, plenty of places are desperate for help. That may not last much longer as we're prone to the boom/bust housing cycles like so many other places. |

When I was a kid, there were two main groups of people: those who worked construction in summer and whatever they could find in winter (plow, work ski lifts) and those who worked for the government. The latter could afford mortgages. These days there is a service sector - tech - that has flushed a lot of better salaries into the valley. IMO that changed things, for the better or worse. |
