My Seven Axiom SL was never designed to be a gravel bike per se, but an all day comfortable cruiser. But having longish chainstays (41.3cm) and the fact that Seven's non-long reach fork still provides nice clearance makes this a very versatile bike.

Here it's pictured with 28c Kenda Karvs on Hed C2's.

I am jealous. Did you have to spec the frame to be built to accommodate larger tires (not gravel large), or is it just how Seven built it?

Signature Cycles helped me with this and I wanted a bike that could accommodate as big a tire as possible while still using Campy calipers. Since I'm on the short side I didn't want toe overlap either.

In hindsight I should've simply told them to design it around Seven's long reach fork so I could go up to 32's but it still works ok. Definitely no worries about harming the finish on dirt roads!

Thru-axles front and rear and clearance for 40c tires. 1 X 11 drivetrain with hydro brakes.

Right now, I have Challenge Eroica tires on and I love them but, I have not been in the dirt yet.

So, it really becomes a queston of what you want to do. Dirt roads in Colorado are pretty easy on a road bike with +32mm tires. Doable on 28mm, but with as sandy as it can get I prefer a little wider tire. There isn't much gravel, not like the flint hills but if you want to do stuff like that a bike that can take 42mm would be nice.

I think the Black Mountain Bikes are very nice. Also, consider some old vitage steel like a Specialized Expedition or Raleigh International.

This thread has lit the fire for me as it has for so many on the site recently. I have this one in the mail now! Can't wait to pound the gravel I was gingerly riding with my Berthoud Rando. Now I won't have to worry about chipping paint or slipping tires!
Now we have been on a few rides and it kicks ass

tax time... and i decided bikes now have to be either too cheap or too good to pass up, and sometimes both. This one and the Weigle were each a BOTH!

so i got rid of my 2 mid range bikes and decided I am into this enough to have a proper stable of bikes. I'm sure you know how it is... I've seen pics of your bikes around

It's a cross bike but it fits 40+mm tires or 650b x 2.1's, probably.
