Grand Prix 400s wear indicators
Good afternoon-- I'm a big fan of Conti's Grand Prix 400ss tires over the years because I usually get about 2,000 miles. My current rear tire has about 600 miles on it so I was surprised the see the wear indicators worn down about half-way. I ride the same roads over the years.
I was wondering if anyone had some thoughts. Thanks. |

Grand Prix 400s wear indicators
I've found that the tires develop flat spots and have to be replace before the wear indicators are totally gone. I no longer pay too much attention to the wear indicators.

I've had good experiences with the Conti wear indicators too. Rear GP4000S and SII tires last ~2K miles for me (172 lb. rider, generally smooth upstate NY roads).

As mentioned above, the back tire will flatten on its ridge but it's not necessary to replace the rear tire until the indicators are gone AND you're just starting to see some cord (threads). I replace the front just before the indicators are gone.

The threads are pretty good wear indicators.

I just retired a 4000S rear tire with 6K miles on it...no cords showing, but the sidewalls were pretty heavily weather-checked. the front went 9K mi, didn't look that bad, but figured I'd gotten my $ worth.
currently have a set of 4000S IIs on the bike...at 3K miles, both are showing a little squaring, but have a fair amount of life left. the II series seems to be a much softer compound that the originals. |
