Same here. I always try to wave to folks who I know have slowed behind me for longer than a few seconds to pass safely when they can see ahead. Or on narrow roads I'll pull off if I know there's a couple cars back who can't pass safely. Or just wave at people who don't pull out in front of me! I figure the more pleasant interactions with drivers that I can engineer the better for everyone on the road.

You are right. It is easy to in the moment over-react. I agree with the sentiment that the vast majority of drivers are good and I have been waiving and smiling, acknowledging them for their kind efforts.

Riding on a 2 lane road, no shoulder, double yellow line, Porsche, going opposite way, passes anyway and goes by my left ear, opposite way, don't know if he sees me, but finger to him...ride along, he pulls up next to me, I'm thinking, 'here we go!' But he apologizes, says he was wrong, sorry....nice

This happens around here all the time. (except there's no Porsches)

It's called the fight-or-flight reaction for a reason. When your well-being is suddenly threatened, it's a natural reflex.

It takes a really cool head to get through these kinds of episodes without doing something a little rash.

I've had one driver acknowledge that he fouled up and apologize. He made a mistake and owned up to it after I yelled ···. It was surprising, and has somewhat softened my reactions.
