Draft Montana bill could restrict cyclists from two lane roads

Wow, I certainly hope this proposed bill doesnt gain any traction:

haha, classic. The hypocrisy is unbelievable. Government decisions create a problem, so they try to solve it through legislating what people can do. How about introducing a bill that requires state roads to adhere to a minimum standard? What a joke.

If they somehow got that through (which seems very unlikely) most of us wouldn't not be able to leave the driveway in Montana. Only one of my normal roads has a shoulder.

The important part is the registration fee, low tax state = high fee state.

We've had similar proposals in MO over the last few years. Some knucklehead legislator decides he's tired of seeing bicycles on the roads and invents an excuse (usually it's done for reasons of "safety") to restrict them on some class of roadway.

It takes effort, but the best way to fight this sort of thing is for cyclists to organize and show up in numbers (the more the merrier) at every public meeting where this is on the agenda to express vocal opposition. Any and every local business that profits from cycling (bike shops, restaurants, B&Bs along popular touring routs, etc etc.) should speak out and say that they will be negatively affected.

The more you can "mainstream" the activity and show that it's an important part of life and business for some non-trivial part of the population and economy, the easier it will be to drive these fools back into their holes.

Good Luck

I certainly don't want to trivialize the Holocaust, but whenever something like this comes up I can't help but think of Martin Niemöller's lines:

Quote:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Public shaming through social media works as well

He really has nothing to loose by going after people like us unless we push back and show him why the proposed law is bad for more people than he realizes.

No just a nut. I think cyclist should get a petition that no farm use vehicles should be allowed on public roads.

Wonder how many people would move to another state if this bs is approved.
