If you want to save weight on the cheap, eBay carbon cages will save you a fair chunk over the Arundels. I have bought several varieties and they are usually ~$22 for a pair and 20g each. Hard to beat that.

Also, if you want to get crazy with skewers, you can get 36g titanium skewers for $36...

Oops. I forgot, I have contol tech skewers on the way. Allegedly theyre 29g

Got the Red22 cranks on, and after fighting with alignment again, it's ready to rock and roll!

Did you take the washers off the Zero-G's? I do that to work with my Firecrests.

No Zero-Gs on here. Currently just have a set of Tektro R741s on there. KCNC CB9s in the post to arrive tomorrow.

Saw that BTI had a 70t belt ring available, and I was already musing about the belt drive project. Was fortuitous enough in that it worked out. It's comically over-sized, and that's the best part.

Lightweight Parts!

Got some stuff in today. Stuff's crazy.

Stuff I changed:
WOOdman post: lost 25 grams, and the WOOdman is significantly longer (50mm+?)
KCNC CB9 brakes - lost 110 grams between brakes and mounting hardware
KCNC Headset Expansion Plug - lost 6 grams!
Alligator ILink brake housing - not sure on weight savings here. oops
Thomson KFC Bars - lost 109 grams here
KCNC bottle cage bolts - lost 1 gram!
Control Tech Skewers - lost 97 grams!

Have not swapped out: stem - should lose some weight here, I'll put a Cannondale C1 stem with Ti hardware on here
Chainring bolts - still have steel ones on there. KCNC bolts I got are too slim; new plan forming
Bar tape: have not taped bars yet. Will use Cannondale Superlight bar tape.
Saddle - have Fabric Scoop Pro on the way. Should lose 68 assuming published weights are to be believed

Packaging for the KCNC brakes was pretty neat.

they look damn nice on the bike

We're currently at 6.01 kg - that's 13.22 lbs for any imperial heathens - which is pretty sweet. I think.

Thanks, man. It's been a super fun project. Has been fun to work through the problems that have arisen with this - it's not like Barnett's manual has a section for "my belt drive conversion has a problem with ____ "

It's so far been an interesting test of my mechanical thinking. So far I'm coming out ahead.


Plan to do some wheels soon. I'm interested in some shallow tubulars for weight savings. Could see myself tracking down some "nicer" direct from taiwan/china hoops and building using maybe an American Classic Micro 58 front and a Tune Mag170 in the back with CX-Rays unless budget allows for Pilar spokes - but that would seem unlikely.

This is great, thanks for all the updates. I had one of those Enve compression plug/top caps, mine was 45g. Ended up going with the Extralite ultrastar3 and top cap, which I believe were 8.5g together. That was a good weight savings and the parts have done their jobs! And some other parts to save weight, Extralight seatpost (130g?), stem (88g), Zipp handlebars (179g?). It's pretty cool, my metal framed winter bike is right around 5.9kg. I was looking at the KCNC brakes, but kept hearing bad reviews on ultralight brakes, so just went with SRAM Red brakes for what I felt was the best combination of proven braking ability and weight (still lots heavier than your KCNC's though!).

Though it looks like I need to sell the seatpost since it's 0-offset and causing discomfort, so ordered a 250mm offset. Which means I also have to sell/swap out the stem to match the new seatpost! From Extralight stem/seatpost to Enve stem/seatpost. There goes my sub-6kg bike!
