My VW is a 2006 GTI and I can sort of guarantee it would pass emissions controls anywhere it would be required because I keep it maintained to factory specs. One could argue that all these little steps add up to a means of being more "green", but then I have to ask why everybody's personal transportation weighs 2 tons? When they test emissions, they go by percentages. Think of an engine as an air pump, 1/2*engine displacement*RPM is your CFM output (I'm assuming you're car is a four stroke) The amount of fuel you send in and how efficient it's used is the emission they test for. (based on this, and some simple chemistry, there should have been questions about the TDI long ago). If they tested emissions based on actual mass (percentage*volume) the picture would be very different. Not too long ago I had an argument with a Prius owner about how "green" modern hybrid cars are. I used the example of a Honda CRX HF, last made almost 25 years ago. With it's D15 motor it got an estimated 49MPG. The Prius does one better at 50MPG, but as the battery cycles that number drops into the mid 40s. Prius owners then argue that it's a hybrid so there are less emissions. WRONG!!! The combination of the Honda motor being more efficient and the Prius towing around an extra 1200 pounds makes the 25 year old car the clear winner there. If progress is making people THINK they are being environmentally friendly, VW was simply making progress.

That is a great question. There really isn't any entity besides the government that can stand up to the power of corporate America. Thanks to the Citizens United decision, corporations have a convenient way to insure that regulatory meddling in their pursuit of profits is minimized. I just don't understand why so many people (including a good number of my friends,) demonize government yet give a free pass to corporate entities like Enron, Dow, VW, Wall Street and the big banks. Its pretty clear that corporations don't have my interests at heart.

But then the Prius has the waste associated with making the batteries, and disposing of the batteries. The Prius is probably more crash survivable, as long as the batteries don't catch fire.

The dealers had no clue. We know the owner of the dealer we bought our car from and my wife teaches his 10 year old. We've been buying Hondas from him for years and traded in my wife's CRV for the JSW. He's sold Hondas and VW's to a huge number of my wife's coworkers. We're hoping to hear from him soon on what to expect but he's as much in the dark as the rest of us.
I also spoke to my VW mechanic buddy who now works for a Porsche/ Audi dealer and as of 2 days ago the service departments haven't heard a peep. He thinks the fix will amount to nothing more than a ecu reflash and an extended warranty on the NOx trap. |
