Brutal! That's a long 4 hours in the heat. We dealt with mid 90s Sunday for a couple hours and it wrecked me. How do you take enough water along with you?

I think I'd just curl up into a ball and cry myself a slow death if I tried that.

That what the big bag in the back was for. A couple of guys gave us water too. We also had iodine tablets just in case.

I sold my cross bike after last season and immediately regretted it. I've never had a gravel-specific bike, but I regularly ride single track on my cross bike and have done a few gravel grinders in Tennessee. This year I wanted to build one bike that would serve for cross, and have enough gearing for longer days on mixed roads. I picked up a Focus Mares CX frameset and built it up last week. I put 53/39 rings and an 11/28 cassette on for now. I've always raced a 1x setup cross bike, but I think this will be more useful all year. I also went a bit wider on tires this time with Challenge Gravel Grinder 36s. So far, I love it...

Tires= hutchingson overrides 38s
Pedals= Time ATAC XC 12
Shoes= Sidi Dragons

All of these a pretty much personal choices. For instance, my buddy Phil (pictured above) sports Specialized Trigger Pros tires, Shimano SPD pedals, and Giro MTB shoes.
