Back in the early 80s I worked at GE's R&D Center as a software engineer. At the time, we mostly used DEC VAX/VMS systems. Disk drives were the size of washing machines and each held about 300MB. Disk space was always at a premium. Referring to this constant battle for space, the manager of the system administration group was fond of saying, "more is never enough," probably roughly coincident with the appearance of MTV. (I kinda doubt Bob S was an MTV viewer. Maybe his kids were...)

It's not very poetic, but:

*Efficiency* is everything.

To be efficient the bike must be ideal combinations of light, stiff, and aero. The cockpit must be ergonomic. The fit must maximize power transfer and comfort at the same time. Efficiency yields long distances at high speeds with minimal fatigue.

From efficiency comes everything else. (Well, everything except purple.)

I'm exaggerating, but not by much!

I get it. Carbon molds are really really expensive. OK! But, I mean, come on. It feels like it's harder than ever to get a truly great-fitting bike.

And then you have a different fit-related problem: bikes that come with proprietary or integrated parts, so it's super hard/expensive to swap out your cockpit for something that fits better! Come on!

I have had a lot of non-cycling injuries over the years, so having a good fit for me is really important to avoid serious discomfort and/or pain. After suffering for many years on ill-fitting bikes, I now finally have one that is super dialed, just exactly right. And it's a blessing to ride the darn thing.

So, for me - it begins and ends with FIT. Riding a bike that truly fits is a joy, and makes mile 100 *almost* as easy as mile 5.

Cheers.
Custom steel bikes come in 1cm increments. 1/2cm if you really insist along with variable geometry, wheelbase and tube slopes. I thank Cannondale often for encouraging me to investigate the world of custom-made bikes when they refused to make good on their promise to trade my Cdale for "Any Frame We make" when i wanted to trade it in. Otherwise, I would have never been able to experience my custom made titanium Serotta.

Everything is Everything. Simple math! Here's another brainteaser: What word is most often misspelled?

Just being on the bike, moving through space, being outdoors propelling yourself forward under your own power.

Agreed: I am on vacation in Mexico now and rented POS singlespeed cruisers for my wife, two kids and I. Two bikes literally have no brakes! Doesn’t matter - we had a blast today rolling on quiet streets to the beach, hitting thr waves, then wandering home (in the dark, with no lights)!!

I just love riding bikes…

Beauty is everything. I am extremely vain and shallow.

Which reminds me of this guy - not terribly healthy, but through sheer willpower he managed to accomplish quite a bit. Died on Monday.

Think of that, the next time your legs are getting tired on a long climb...
