Incredible.
I can only imagine the surprise and satisfaction when you discover that your already awesome 700c bike also fits extra fun&huge 650b. Last edited by sparky33; 07-24-2017 at 08:08 AM. |

Went searching for a bike route to a favorite swimming hole which sits at the top of the Shawangunks. Mapped it and there were "jeep trails" coming from two directions.
Tried the route from the east, had to go through some private property but just went for it. This route would have been ideal since it starts at a trailhead not too far and not an enormous climb from the hole. Route ended suddenly at this bridge, with the overgrowth on the other side being the "trail" Darn. So I turned around and went down the mountain to a trailhead that leads to the hole from the west. The trail is called the "Smiley" carriage road and started out a good climb, but very nice and I was enjoying. then about halfway up it got more rugged, and then even more rugged, and it was soon too much for my road bike to handle. so I hike-a-biked for a bit. That wasn't easy either, then I almost stepped on this guy (decent sized Timber Rattlesnake). He spooked me and I spooked him and he would not leave his spot just next to the pretty narrow trail. Gave him space and time, but wouldn't budge. Tried scaring him away but that just got him riled up. Growth was too dense to detour through the woods and I couldn't pass without being 2 ft away from him, so turned around and saving the swimming hole for another day and will just get there the regular way (which is not bike-able due to a steep scramble). |

That Vanilla has seen a lot of guises over the years. I bought it (originally painted National Forest green) with racks and lights, but it only took a max 700x28 tire even though the clearances were HUGE due to close placement of the brake bridge (apparently the original owner really wanted to max at 700x28 when this was built in '06.) I sent it back and had the bridges and pump peg moved, and repainted Imron Lilac, then the real retro-enthusiast-randonneur racks and stem made by Johnny Coast.
After staring and staring at the clearances I figured I had to try fat tires -- I'm fairly sure I can fit a 650b x 55 in there -- next up to try are something like 1.95" Kenda Smallblock 8's. Versatility! |

also @ sashae - that color is amazing, would love to see how it looked originally. Not the biggest fan of national forest green (it looks good on my elephant but just not my color of choice) |

A brief history.
As received: Stripped to go back to Vanilla -- you can see the pump peg to the rear of the seat tube, I had it moved to 45deg angle on the seat tube to afford greater tire clearance. Back from Vanilla, with Johnny Coast custom stem and racks: Converted to Shimano Hydro: |
