Maybe not needed. If you can find out if your engine is one where the pistons can hit the valves if the belt breaks or if a broken belt just means the engines stops, gets towed to a shop where a new belt can be installed. OTOH if pistons bend valves you are looking at BIG $$$$$.

Is it possible for someone other than the one named on these cards to use them?

I got them but by the time they came I had already traded my TDI in. The instructions to register and use the cards require that you still have proof of ownership for the vehicle.

You have to own the car to get the cards activated. Our dealership did a check (go out to car, check VIN, etc).

*edit but apparently someone else can use them.

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I checked the service interval manual and it says the timing belt needs to be replaced at the 110k or 120k interval so we've got some time.

"Given the scale of the difficulties, VW’s executive board member responsible for procurement, Francisco Garcia Sanz, hasn’t even been discussing technical details of the recall plan in talks with the EPA in the past few days but has instead been trying to arrive at a 'a big solution,' WirtschaftsWoche learned from people familiar with the talks."

"This option would involve the construction of a new factory to manufacture electric vehicles, buying back and scrapping affected diesel cars and purchasing nitrogen emissions rights. This would be a payment for thousands of tonnes of nitrogen oxide the diesel cars emitted above their allowed limits."

Gen1. It's possible but it makes no sense. Gen2 and Gen3 cars with SCR have a shot with a flash, increased urea dosing, and possibly a higher volume cat.

What's interesting is that VW's BOD is involved. Will we find anything out on Thursday? Stay tuned.

Yup. I continue not to have any idea what's going to happen. But it's become increasingly clear that VW has no viable fix for the Gen1 cars. Whether CARB and the EPA will allow those cars to stay on the road regardless remains something of a mystery.
