I'm curious why some people have no problem with FSD, and others report that it repeatedly just stops for no reason. Unfortunately you'll never find that out from Tesla, they keep that kind of thing secret.

That's the part I don't get. Staying tense and in a driving position is not self driving, right? I've never experienced it, but, from the sound of it, I'd rather be controlling things, not waiting for what could be disaster every second. "Erratic human behavior" Yeah, those pesky humans. What are you going to do with them?

Tense? One hand somewhere on the wheel, anywhere, any hand to verify that a human is sitting behind the wheel somewhat aware of the surroundings in case some other irresponsible human does something stupid is the bare minimum requirement. I'd rather not be manually controlling things like speed with relation to speed limit, lane position, or distance from other vehicles on a long road trip if I don't have to. The car does it all perfectly, every time. It see's the lane, it knows the speed limit (it sees the speed limit signs and has data from the roads), it has 10 cameras and see's all angles at all times significantly better than someone sitting in the drivers seat. Yes - erratic human behavior is the problem. Computers follow the rules they are given much, much, much more than humans who make their own decisions about when to cross the road, where they cross the road, what speed to drive, etc. Anyway, TGIF, don't knock it til you've tried it internet folks. |

Maybe I should have added for this forum, those pesky humans on those damn bicycles. They should buy a Tesla!
"human is sitting behind the wheel somewhat aware of the surroundings in case some other irresponsible human does something stupid is the bare minimum requirement." Do you see the problem there? "Somewhat aware of the surroundings"? Sorry, I want everyone to be aware of their surroundings, at all times. It's why I wear bright colors and have two almost blinding lights on the bike. We're being brainwashed by these incredibly wealthy tech nerds that humans suck, their robots are better. And probably thousands will be killed and maimed over the next decade from their unregulated products, but they will be all be living in their .1% utopian gated communities, laughing at us.

As always, I refer to that excellent Blomkamp movie, Elysium. Be careful what you hope for.

Tens of thousands of Americans are killed each year in traffic accidents, largely involving ICE vehicle operated by fallible humans. Where’s the rage?
So far my dabbling with FSD in my Y is extremely minimal but what it did was fairly impressive, if not perfect. Most aviation accidents are found to have human factors and human error as the root cause. Airplane autopilots are not ‘smart’ devices though. They do no decision making. They only respond to pilot inputs. |

I also agree with the WSJ article saying Elon is trying to make himself seem indispensable to Tesla before the shareholder vote on his pay package. It seems to me he is bear raiding his own company to get a low stock price to set his next compensation package. In my mind, this fits his character. https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/e...hare_permalink |

The money in charging stations seems like it’s in what hasn’t been tried yet. Namely put them at places more like gas stations with convenience stores. I’m always reading a good gas station makes its profits when people come in and buy coffee, soda, snacks, alcohol, lottery tickets, etc..
EV drivers have to wait around longer, give them something to spend money on. I know this is coming and there’s a little of it already but so many chargers are not placed to take advantage of this and/or let another business get those auxiliary sales. |

34% of Americans rent. How about apartment buildings? You know, with parking lots? Who's going to pay for that? Or the condo complex I'm moving out of. Every unit will need a charger. How much will that cost to install, and does everyone expect the condo owners to just come up with the significant sum for the special assessment to pay for that, and it's constant maintenance?

For EV, most should top-up every night at home. Saab, how often do you have to stop to top-up the EV? Only on road trips? And most days, you are charged at home? You lose the 5 weekdays when drivers are going to and from work. No stops necessary unless you need to pee. Moreover, the length of time being longer, means fewer people can charge at peak times. Morning and evening rush is like 60% of the stops for fuel. The chainstores have models for queuing behavior, and models for age brackets at what hours of the day and what product should be nudged. If you are a chain now, your decision is to swap out gas pump space for EV space, which is a lower traffic product. It's a numbers game. Quote:

My 44.9 square mile township (in NJ) is getting its first charging station. It's being installed at the Senior center.

some of the charging stations that are being abandoned because of Musk's precipitous actions are in NYC. That must have taken some work to get to the point where they could be constructed.
There's probably no hope for Tesla long-term. Get rid of musk and the cultists leave, keep him and he gets rid of anything worth buying. They don't have any new cars in the pipeline. Robotaxi isn't going to happen. |

High power DC fast chargers are for road tripping and are best left for that task. Most charging should be slow charging at home or work. That’s by far the most cost effective and best for the battery.
I’ve had good experience with Tesla Superchargers and I’m a bit worried about what this latest stunt is all about. |
