Modern bar for 7700 group?
I’m restoring a 90s Davidson and with a beautiful Dura Ace 7700 group. Id like a more modern style transition to the hoods. Most of the examples i see feature a steep downslope or significant bar rotation to get flatish. Can I get flat and still reach the levers ?

Well you got your Soma Hwy 1 and the Nitto Noodle and that’s kind of it, unless you want to go with some sort of wonky quill 31.8 stem. This is not a great shot, but shows the Hwy 1 shape (with 6400 levers).

I like my Hwy Ones, and I have a set I polished (26mm) on one bike.

If you don't mind the lack of a chrome finish, I used the Deda Piega bars to complete my neo-retro De Rosa SLX build. They have the modern Deda RHM shape, but with a 130 drop, for 26.0mm clamps. They work very well with the new Shimano R8000 shifters.

It’s a 1in threadless. Currently have a Nitto stem (26.0) and noodles. I’ll play with the angles again.

Sounds like you want a compact bar, which the Noodle is not. Nitto makes other compact models though, like the M151.

It’s not about the compact nature. I actually like the noodle in general. I want a flat ramp to the hoods. This means rotating the bars back which angles the levers in a way that makes it harder to reach the brakes in the drop without angling my wrists.

It should be fine and doesn't require anything special IIRC. You're just moving the hoods down on the bars and then angling the bars up. But you need to be careful to get it just right, and maybe you need a different reach to the bars to accomplish it. A lot of the bars back then had a much bigger reach built into the bars, and that would get even more extreme if you were setting the bike up in the modern way. The first bike I had setup that way was a quill stem and I think I ended up riding much less drop than a modern bike to make up for the extra reach with the bigger handlebar, then I rode in the drops a lot more to get low.
I basically always had to set my handlebar/hood interface up in the modern style and I had both 105 and D/A of that era (and maybe I had Ultegra too?) and I could always make it work. I could never do the "bar angling down and hood angling up" thing, my hand just could not fit in there comfortably at all. The first road bike I got came setup that way and I almost instantly had severe pain in my hands (like nerve pain level?) and went back to the LBS and they set the bars up with a flat ramp to the hoods and I was immediately good to go. Yeah Hwy 1 and also if you can find it the old VeloOrange Daija not the current version which is a flared thing ,old one just like the Hwy has nice ramp to hoods transition

Deda Piega 26.0 Soma Highway One All great 26.0 mm bars that play well enough with quill stems* and look great/feel great with modern levers. I like riding a lot of old quill stem bikes and can't stand old school shapes and will not use a 31.8 bar with adapter either. *depending on the shape of the quill stem and design I like to reverse the bolt against a coin or otherwise pry the stem open slightly to get around the bends of a compact bar without scratching anything. |
