The new ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT on Netflix. Intense. I preferred watching it in German with English subtitles.

A Man Called Ove
A Swedish film with a human story and some classic Scandinavian dark humor. I just saw Hollywood picked up the story and it's now being given a very American treatment with Tom Hanks, from the looks of the trailer. |

I just watched a delightful silent film that is almost 100 years old, Our Hospitality. In one scene, Buster Keaton rides a velocipede.

This may be one of the most suspenseful films ever made--and its noire-ish/Casablanca setup is perfect for what follows. I first saw this as part of a local series honoring Montand (I think--it was a long time ago--late '60s) and spent years hoping I would get a chance to see it again.
Apparently HBOMax currently has it--and we don't have a subscription--Drat! And while we are on the French--I have long been a fan of 'Rendezvous' (which I first saw as a 16mm print at a friend's house, who brought home a projector and a bunch of old films -- 10 minutes of pure adrenaline while the man races through the streets of Paris at dawn. IMDB shows only purchases (I was given a DvD as a gift)--but it used to be available on YouTube. There is also a French TV program where the director, Claude Lelouch is interviewed about making the film, which also used to be on YouTube. Last edited by paredown; 11-17-2022 at 08:18 AM. |

Aftersun is currently in theaters. I found it to be a good yet sad movie dealing with mental health, adolescence, memory, and father daughter relationships.

The Sniper (1952): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045161/. Excellent but little known thriller and psychological study of a mentally disturbed man who preys on women. Terrific location shooting on the streets of San Francisco.
The Breaking Point (1950): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042281/. An adaptation of Hemingway's "To Have and Have Not" that's much closer to the novel than the version starring Bogart and Bacall, and it's much darker.
