Possible rib fractures - this is more serious. Believe it or not, this can be criteria for acute inpatient admission. The concern is that breathing becomes progressively more shallow because it's painful to have full diaphragmatic excursion, so you wind up slowly sinking into respiratory failure before you even realize what's happening. Intercostal rib blocks are used to ease the pain of breathing until you're safely on your own. |
