Champion cyclist Ethan Boyes hit and killed by driver in SF

https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/artic...o-17884803.php

What a horrible tragedy. Pretty sure I've seen him riding the outdoor track that's two blocks from where I live. Some local Nextdoor posts are reporting that the driver was drunk. Hundreds (thousands?) of cyclists including me take the exact same route when heading out for a ride from SF to Marin.

It's tragic and a little bit unnerving for me since I ride that route almost every other day.

I used to sleep in the bushes right there when I was homeless.

You were neighbors with Diane Feinstein.

Horrible story. Half the city goes up that way to ride in Marin. I heard on the news the car was speeding and got him on the windshield.

Avoidable tragedy. We need real consequences for driving under the influence. RIP

Surprised none of the police or media statements mentioned wether he was wearing a helmet or not. They usually love to point that out to put blame on the victim. Like it would matter one way or another getting ran down by a vehicle.

I often saw Ethan training at the Polo Field cycling track, but I didn't know him personally. We introduced ourselves and exchanged a few pleasantries a while back, but never really talked much so I didn't know of his accomplishments in the track world until this happened. I often admired his smooth and powerful riding at the Polo Field and I thought to myself that this guy must be a competitive track rider. Now I know, which makes me feel really sad for what we lost, and ...Angry that it happened.

No doubt..I see people who have a wreck and have had 3-4 DUIs..no license, but easy to buy a car and drive..with no license, no insurance.

Hard time perhaps..make room by releasing the many who are in jail for petty weed possession offenses. The 3 strike stuff...

Was it published or confirmed the driver was drunk / under the influence?

There are some reddit threads that include comments from people on the scene, including the person who pulled the driver out of the car and turned off the engine. The driver was reportedly speeding, crossed the yellow into oncoming traffic, and didn't realize he hit somebody.

I've raced with Ethan many times around the country. This is so, so, so ****ing awful.

Update on this. I didn’t realize the driver is 81 yrs old. Terrible tragedy.
