Road rims, vintage or new?
Hello, I'm looking to rebuild my 84 Road Bike in vintage Super Record parts and what I'd like to know is, what rims do you recommend? I was thinking of sticking with a period correct rim, however I haven't ruled out a modern alloy rim, basically something that looks vintage.

H+Son TB14 looks vintage but is new, polished ones look good. Anodized was big then & there are still new/lightly used Mavic MA40's and G4's out there.
Wayne Bingham at Velo Classique has new Wolber super Champion Alpines in dark ano, 32 & 36 hole drillings. |

I just went through a "rebuild" of an 81 team miyata. It came stock with silver araya rims in 81. They were as soft as kittens. Period for the time, at least for tubulars, would have also been something like GP4s. I decided to use some Mavic Reflex I had on hand instead. Far better rim..
if you're going clincher, Those H+son previously mentioned would be a better bet. |

Yeah, my first though as well.
The inside width of the TB14 is 17.5mm, which is quite a bit wider than the 12-13mm inside width of even the box-style vintage rims. I've built with them and they are a pleasure to tension up, feel solid and hold their shape like a HED Belgium rim (i.e. like a motorcycle rim). |

For a reliable wheelset that I really wanted to ride I have used Mavic Open Pros CD (with the labels removed). There is something about a large, machined brake track.
For wheels that look cool I've got some GP4's. Sure, they're reliable in their own way but then you get into that whole tubular conversation.

Sorry...don't want to drift the thread, but can someone quickly tell me about the name of this company? Guy named Hank and his son make rims? Last name of owner sounds like "Hplusson"? just curious...thx

If you don't want to afford those, then the TB-14 is indeed a great option. True modern box section rim. If you want to be really retro, you can run a box-section front with an 'aero' back (like an Escape or A23) M |

Or some nice Ambrosio - Excellence or Excellight come to mind - if you can find them.

Super Champion or it's modern-day sorta equivalent Sun XCD.

If you don't feel like building, I have two new wheelsets that might interest you. One is a set of Record hubs laced to Ambrosio Excellence rims, the other is Record hubs laced to dark ano Wolber Super Champion Alpines. Both freewheel, of course, with skewers.

TB14 in hard ano is a really excellent way to go for your purposes. They build up great, look great, and last.
