Came here expecting a discussion of another over hyped 22 year old. This is much better.

Sagan is "over hyped"? Seems to pretty much live up to from what I have seen.

He turned 27 in January. Hopefully he has a few more years of wheelies in him.

He's one of the strongest one day racers out there right now, for sure. But the hype started early, and he has grown into some of it, and still has a long way to go to live up to the rest of it, and probably never will. People got way out over their skis with Sagan and are walking back the expectations as reality sets in.

Gaviria is the latest young rider they've started hyping. Hype now. Results later, maybe. Talk to Edvald Boasson Hagen.

Indeed, the 22-year-old Sagan is a genetic freak the likes of which the sport has not seen in decades, if ever. During Sagan’s first three years in the pro ranks, he’s outsprinted sprinters, out-climbed climbers, and excelled at just about everything in between. Career highlights include stage wins at the Tours of California, Romandie, Suisse, and Oman, plus Grand Tour stage victories in Spain and France. (Emphasis mine.)

Even by Bicycling standards, this is ridiculous hyperbole and demonstrably untrue unless someone traveled back in the past and eliminated Eddy Merckx from our timeline.

I love him right now, favorite racer! He has personality, his ability to descend is glorious, and he makes things fun to watch. His team isn't as strong as others and yet he continues to kick tail.

I think he has earned his respect and kudos. Plus his bike handling skills are bad ass, he makes difficult things look so darn easy. I dig folks who have that "gift" to be able to do that.

The Sagan reference aside, I dig that the child in the video is doing so well on a bike.

My wife's niece and nephew have no interest in learning to bicycle (they're 7 and 5). I've offered to teach them a bunch of times, they're just not into it... let alone riding a wheelie like that. Kid must have some excellent balance and motor control.

Do they have friends nearby that ride?.. That seems to be the biggest motivator for my kids wanting to do one thing or another – are their friends doing it also, and do they feel the desire to tag along?

(As an aside, it seems like many families - including ours - these days end up in neighborhoods where kids tooling around with friends, unsupervised, isn't practical or even possible. Their get-togethers outside of school tend to be scheduled "playdates" that involve coordinating 4 calendars well in advance and the parents driving them to/from. I grew up essentially poor; horsing around in the dirt and tooling around on crappy old bikes was the norm. My kids are "enjoying" a much more prosperous childhood... with a completely different palette of opportunities and limitations, not all of them to my liking...)

Two world championships on the track may not impress Paceline but they are results.
