The electronic leash of the modern world is self imposed. Those kids weren't subjected to endless marketing and hype, so they rode their bikes.
In contrast to that picture, look at any group of people waiting for the bus, and you'll find most of them doing something with their phone. This full time exposure to the internet is why people fear riding their bikes, or doing anything that was common before everybody had smart phones. Watch people at the supermarket, they can no longer make simple decisions by themselves...
I often point out that use of a smart phone follows the same pattern as substance addiction, and lots of people agree.
