I've closed mine because I also close my plastic bottles. I'm not sure this is an issue. The water comes out when you pour and tilt the bottle. Unless it's very full and you are just starting out, I can't see it splashing out.
You wouldn't want to leave it "open" in a bag or laying down. Don't want to with a plastic one, either, but the leak will be real with a Bivo.
