The Dead made this a part of their legacy but this video is from 1974. Sure, they put their own spin on the extended jam but they were late by a long time to Cream.

Cream
Live at The Grande Ballroom, Detroit
October 15, 1967

This is from early in the Cream years, when the Clapton/Bruce/Baker wanted to drive & carry the show competing between themselves on stage. Dimed Marshalls, lousy PA.

But this got old 'n' tired fast even for these guys and just as those fleeting moments existed, soon under the weight of expectation, the virtuoso extended jam became something Clapton couldn't run away from fast enough.
