Hurricane Ridge
Out of three attempts I have made it twice. Forgot to take something to eat and ran out of gas on one try. The views are fantastic. The cedar trees are impressive and you do end up above the tree line. Starting at the P.A. city dock (sea level) it is about 18 miles to the end of the road and I think the elevation is right at a mile. There are a couple of tunnels that going up aren't bad but coming down at 40+ mph are really dark. Of course you could slow down, but I never think of that. It does cost about 8 dollars to get in the park, which is about the last ten miles of the ride. If you are in P.A. stop in for a great meal and killer wine list at Bella Italia, and tell Neil (the owner) that Earl sent you.
