I have replaced most of my hangers with north shore billet units. They're stiffer, shifting is better, and they arent made of butter like most stock hangers that snap off if the wind blows too hard.

So it might be risky in damaging the frame but that hasnt been the case, a hanger cracking and turning the derailleur into a pretzel is also a risk.
