I tried cutting the tape for the Shimano ones the first time I installed them. That was a nightmare as it dramatically reduced the strength of the tape which quickly broke in half as I tried to finish the wrap.
Since then I just wrap around them with no cutting which is easier and much more reversible. To my eye it looks perfectly fine.
