Has nothing to do with trust, these are brand new bike parts...they just may not have a warranty is all..they are still 'probably' first quality bike parts, not seconds or blems.

Here is how Maestro weighs in on the issue. He runs a shop out of the UK.
"Price Cartels Are Illegal

The current fashion is to defend high prices, by authorising dealers, i.e. a price cartel, designed to remove the competitive element of sales, PRICE CARTELS ARE ILLEGAL, in virtually every country, in Europe, a company director involved in price cartels, can be liable on conviction to a prison sentence of up to five years.

The only thing you are guaranteed from an authorised dealer, IS A HIGHER PRICE, you are not guaranteed knowledge of the product, superior service, or even a correctly transacted warranty."

I guess they got that phone call about EPS. He's doing the buy bike, strip parts, sell at huge discount, gig.

Price cartels may be illegal but selling at margin that keeps the lights on isn't either.

Maybe Maestro needs to look up Circuit City or Ultimate Electronics and how volume applies to margin.

Haha, I'm an old guy, but do they still sell "groups" (OK, since you asked about Campy, then its Gruppo!)?

When I first started riding, back in the old days, a gruppo had like 10 parts: front and rear ders, crank, bb, chain, hs, shifters (usually dt or bar-ends), brakes (which included levers), hubs and seatpost. Some even included bars and stem (usually of a different mfr from the group!)

Today, I believe a "group" consist of 7 pieces - frt and rear ders, crank, bb cups, shifters (which includes the levers!), chain and brakes.

BTW-'gruppo' is 8 piece..

if it's from sram or shimano-group.

from me in the $2400 range for Record, 8 piece gruppo.

He can search small bike shops for a while and may still need to either PM/Email or use that old fashioned thing to find out...a telephone.

Think he was asking about my prices-no internet search would give him info.

The irony is that Private Central Banking Cartels are legal and you
are bartering your labor in their shopping green stamps, created outa thin air.

Ultimately they control the price, for they determine the amount of
shopping green stamps in circulation.

Here lays the problem. How can the LBS get the parts a decent price so that after they mark it up it is still somewhat competitive? Are there too many middle men taking too much? Is there a way that the LBS could order straight from the manufacturer and skip the middle men? It would seem with the web and modern logistics this should be easy.

I'm gonna pile on the love feet for Velomine. I just bought a record group from them for the Sachs and their price was within 100 of the UK houses and I got the parts the next day. Plus I like supporting them cause they're great guys. And the support is always there.

(and I'll also bet that your LBS can come close to the Velomine price of $2,495.00 for a Campy Record gruppo)

I would like to buy from LBS but paying twice the price of mail order is not easy to adjust to. The LBS also happens to be right next door to a campagnolo distributor but the prices are still high--very high.

Not by much. I had a bike built at a LBS, cost of a Campy Super Record was $2,900, and Velomine has it at $2,800. So, for $100 extra, my LBS does the build.
