Guy walks into LBS, is he nuts?

Getting around to putting headset back together. I had cleaned & lubed parts a few weeks ago. In the meantime the parts bins undergo a bit of resorting. Unnecessary but so rewarding.

Well of course I misplaced the lower crown race. I wait a few days thinking where it went will materialize in my aged brain. Another round of looking while remaining fairly calm & admiring my resort skills.

Off to the LBS for a 1 1/4 crown race w my 45/45 degree bearing in hand. Is it too much to think a big bike shop would have such a thing? It used to be easy to get small parts local.

Maybe there is too much diversification of parts to fit so many standards that its too much too expect?

But then they couldn't even figure out what to order!

1 1/4 is kind of an odd size. I think you need this:

That's my question really. Is it odd? Is a tapered 1/4 to 1/8 an odd thing to have parts for?

I would guess that depends on whether the bike brands carried there use an 1.25" tapered fork or not. If so then it's still pretty odd ;)

Yes. Its odd.

I wasn't even aware of 1 1/4 integrated headsets. I've had numerous frames that take 1 1/8 integrated but thought most companies went to 1 1/2 x 1 1/8.

when I saw that they were trying to get road bikes to use 1 1/4", I thought it made sense. It probably does make sense, but 1 1/2" seems to have taken over anyway. Or rather, 1 1/4" failed to supplant 1.5 on road bikes.

Bike shops no longer sell parts. They sell lifestyles.

LBS' are "damned if you do, damned if you don't" stocking parts like this.

Look on the fork. Last time I was missing a part like that, I had already installed it.

Yes, done that before :-). No 'luck' in this case.

Ok, I learned something, so some slack on this one. That they couldn't figure out what to order, not so much. As pointed out, I found it on ebay in a matter of seconds. Prolly for 1/2 the cost & here in two days.

1/8 to 1/4 very odd, even these days with so many 'standards'.

They're not going to have a room full of those awaiting someone to come looking for one. Especially in Kansas. Anyone that does is on the express to going out of business

Be patient and not an immediatist and you'll have one in your hot little hand in a day or 3. QBP is like a day away, and they have everything like this. Just in time is the phrase of the day

PS: Merlin and Wiggle won't have it either...and they won't pour thru a catalog to find just the widget you need

QBP put in a new warehouse in Lancaster, I asked for something one afternoon, next afternoon I had it in my hands.

Not to disagree w the main theme here, but we do have major metro area in KS.

And my online source had a hot little number for me in minutes w the same bearing dimensions the LBS was using to no avail. So I get my $10 widget & they keep getting the business.
