OT: RIP Whitey Herzog

It's a sad day for baseball. Ken Holtzman and Carl Erskine also have left us.

I grew up an avid Mets fan, but I grudgingly had to respect the Cardinals and the way they played. In retrospect, I'd say that Whitey Herzog was my favorite manager of all time. And not only was he a great manager, he was also the GM who built the great teams of the 1980's: Ozzie Smith, Lonnie Smith, Willie McGee, Bruce Sutter, George Hendrick, Andy Van Slyke, Bob Forsch, Joaquin Andujar, etc.

Whiteyball was just exciting to watch, even when the team I rooted for was getting beat by great baserunning and defense. On offense, they mainly hit singles, but you knew they were going to run once they were on base.

Indeed, a sad day in St Louis.

May the White Rat rest in peace.

My all-time favorite team. My all-time favorite player (Ozzie).

I mean, just for the term Whiteyball, HOF material.
