Old photo. Has 700x42 on it now, with room to spare.

Can anybody who also rides the current generation of Shimano short reach brakes like Ultegra 6800 and DA9000 tell me how their mid or long reach calipers feel in comparison? I have a bike with hydro disc now and a bike with Ultegra calipers and I can definitely tell a difference between them, but the Ultegra calipers definitely have all the stopping power I need, even in the mountains. Is it going to be a big difference going to the Grand Cru, the TRP, or the Shimano?

To me the Shimano R600 and R650 feel the same as a regular 7700 or 6500 brake calipers.

I'm in South Florida, so brake use is optional.

because rivendell bikes are not heavy enough as it is, loaded down with steel forks, steel railed leather saddles, full cage pedals, and fancy waxed canvass luggage, so they throw in an extra top tube to keep the weight up.

...because then you get to have more lugs.

Yeah... To me there was a noticeable improvement when I switched from 7800 to 9000 series brakes, and I'm hoping to move back to a more mountainous area soon so I'd really like a comparison with the current best in caliper braking from people who have serious descending.

I'm basically thinking I want to build a fat tire road racing bike for the mountains and don't want to give up the weight for disc or deal with it mechanically. If I give up a lot between the best modern calipers and mid-reach brakes, I might rethink (probably build to max out the pads on a short reach caliper).

Plus: Any thoughts on brake feel when mixing Shimano super SLR pull levers with these brakes?

I've ridden both and the answer is...

Centerpulls are awesomer in every way.
